Harold-Weir-ep01-01

Harold Weir at the dinner table.

Harold Weir is the father of Lindsay and Sam and husband of Jean. He is portrayed by Joe Flaherty.

Character[]

He owns A-1 Sporting Goods, which he feels proud of as a successful store owner. He served in the Korean War as a brave veteran. He is very old-fashioned and funny by dishing out lessons at the dinner table, generally by telling stories about people who did whatever he is mad at Lindsay for doing and finishing the story with "you know what they're doing now? They're dead!"

Biography[]

In the second episode, Harold and Jean are both going out of town, so they task Lindsay and Sam to look after the house, while they are away. Unknown to the Weir parents, Lindsay's new friends advise that she throws a party. Lindsay hesitantly agrees in the hopes of pleasing Daniel, who had recently split up from Kim. She asks Sam not to tell their parents and he agrees, even if the thought of serving beer at a party worries him after going to a school assembly, which focused on alcohol-related deaths. Returning to the Weir home, Harold and Jean both didn't see any evidence of a wild party, since Lindsay and her younger brother manage to drive away all of the guests by allowing Neal to call the cops and to clean up in time to avoid getting in trouble.

In "Tricks and Treats", Harold celebrates Halloween with his family by decorating his house, stacking up on candy to serve to kids, and dressing up as a vampire. Unfortunately, Lindsay doesn't want to spend time with the family, because she is busy with hanging out with her Freak companions, who pressure her to vandalize property of others by smashing mailboxes. On top of that, the majority of kids dressing up in costumes are not interested in candy, and the parents of their kids think the Weir parents are feeding them poison, causing the guests to leave and Harold removing his Halloween costume to stop celebrating. Lastly, Sam has a terrible day when he is upset about Lindsay accidentally tossing an egg at him, after his candy was stolen by Alan in the neighborhood. It seems as if Halloween is the worst Holliday for the Weir family to have this year.

In "Kim Kelly Is My Friend", at night time, Harold and Jean both meet Lindsay's friend, Kim, who had an awful day confronting her parents' emotionally unstable rage and witnessing her former stoned best friend, Karen Scarfoli, flirting with a stoned Daniel. Harold and Jean permit Kim to lay low to heal her emotional wound, but when getting a call from Kim's mother about Kim's lies to them, Lindsay's parents become displeased about it. Also, Nick arrives to the Weir home to inform Lindsay that Daniel desires to see Kim, who is uncomfortable and mad at Daniel for cheating on her for Karen. Eventually, Harold and his family see Kim quickly making up with Daniel in the kitchen. Kim leaves with Daniel during the night for the Weir family to head to bed.

At the end of "Tests and Breasts", Harold and Jean arrive to Mr. Kowchevski's office to see Lindsay with Daniel at William McKinley High School. Jeff Rosso, the high school's counselor, is also there, and Mr. Kowchevski tests Daniel to see whether or not if he is cheating by passing his algebra test. Daniel has trouble with taking the test, and he talks about how he was viewed as being a dumb or failure kid for not getting good grades as the normal kids and the smart kids do back in his middle school. Hysterically, Lindsay bursts out laughing, confusing Daniel, Lindsay's parents, Jeff, and Mr. Kowchevski and causing the adults to argue with each other about Lindsay.

In "The Diary", when Harold and Jean fear that their daughter's Freak friends are having a negative effect on her, they forbid her from hanging out with Kim. Harold suggests that he and Jean should violate their daughter's private property or social boundary by reading her diary in her bedroom. When they do, what they read is about Lindsay despising the way her "authoritarian" parents tell her what to do all of the time, and how she was never given freedom to do anything she wants. This sends their marriage into a crisis.

In "Looks and Books", Harold and Jean indefinitely ground her and prohibit her from seeing the gang of Freaks ever again. This is due to Lindsay accidentally crashing the Weir family car into another person's car, while trying to help drive Daniel and his friends around. Experiencing her harsh punishment, Lindsay gladly accepts this, and she starts to hang out with her old nerdy friends, including Millie Kentner, again. She also rejoins the Mathletes to show that she is a fierce competitor on the team at school. Harold and Jean are proud of Lindsay's obedience to them, and reconnecting with her old life again, until the Freaks manage to persuade her back to their gang when they showed up to the math competition to applaud for her excellent performance.
